Recommended Dance Footwear
Your ability to dance will be affected by the shoes you have on your feet. In the best case you’ll dance like a pro. In the worst case you’ll ruin your knees. Do not wear sneakers or flip flops and expect to enjoy ballroom dancing.
Your primary concern is providing sufficient slippage on the soles of your shoes to easily allow pivots and turns. You do not need slippage on the heels.
Here are some suggestions for improving your dance experience:
1) Wear shoes that have leather soles. Rubber soles on dress shoes or sneakers will make your dance experience difficult and uncomfortable.
2) Modify sneakers with the following:

Note: Do not order the full slip over socks since they will be prone to cause slippage and falls on ballroom hardwood floors.
3) Modify rubber sole based shoes with the following:

You may be able to find paste on felt in local department or craft stores that will also serve this purpose.
4) Buy dance shoes
The best solution, but expensive, and can only be used on hardwood floors.
